Celebrity chefs are beginning to annoy be as much as Paris Hilton does. There are just too many of them on TV these days.

“Caught me at home clothes!” What a great expression, I can only assume you are referring to bill granger, he of the lower-case letters. He cracks me up – did you know he has a CD out? It’s his personal ‘cooking mix’ or something. As a member of the public, I find celebrity chefs tiresome – after all, they are a one-trick pony, all they do is cook. You don’t see Ronald McDonald putting out his own CDs though. I guess when sourcing a story it is easier for the media to write another puff piece about bill granger or Donna Hay, rather than make the effort to discover the names of some new chefs.

First of all to exile7, hopefully one day redemption will ensue and you will be able to return to the 21st century, until then leave Paris Hilton, one of today's icons of popular culture alone...
Now in terms of celeb chefs in particular, Jamie Olivier... I couldn't disagree with you more Sarah T (a relative of Mr T perhaps?)... Jamie has done so much to bring good, simple and healthy eating into kitchens and households around the world - remeber his "school lunches"? I don't think his recipes are that challenging at all - especially for someone who works for a food based website...
Finally, Sarah T - your mum is the cult of the celeb chef... your mum...

I don't know - at least celebrity chefs actually have skills, unlike reality TV stars for example. Food is awesome when it's created by skilled hands and pretty much everyone gets publicity for what they do - writers, actors, politicians... so why not chefs?

Yes more recognition should be given to people who experiment with food and come up with brilliant recipes. It's an art form in a way.

We can all be celebrity chefs now... I was reading that this website will soon allow members to upload their own recipes that will be displayed on this very site. Now we can all rate each others very own recipes.

I have to admit the rather nauseating focus on 'Bill's World' is making me like reading SMH's Good Living less and less each Tuesday. Perhaps a new celebrity chef might be in order... please?

Come on - we all love a little bit of a celebrity chef. I for one are a sucker for the foodie channels/shows. My son is an apprentice chef, perhaps the shows and celeb chefs could be seen as a learning tool for these up and coming chefs. HAPPY DAYS!!!

I believe most of the celebrity chefs on the telly are just that celebrities. We will never know whether they actually created their recipes, or whether they had "writers" do it for them, much like the kings of comedy have their writers and the politicians have their advisers. The celebs themselves are there because they have the face, and the talent to present what they present with flair and fun. My personal favourites are the Cook and the Chef on ABC. Where's the Galloping Gourmet gone? MikeR

Hi there guys, I myself have had a gutfull (pardon the pun) of the celebrity chefs, notably Nigella Lawson. So sorry to name drop but I find her program devoid of any sound recipes that ulise ability and creativity. Her recipes are basic and if she did not "ohh" and "ahh" throughout the whole program coupled with non stop devouring of meals prepared, there would only be 8 minutes of actual cooking. I remember watching Paul Bocuse programs as a child and being inspired to make tasty sophisticated meals as he did unlike the smut that Nigella does!

I still love 'em. Especially ga-ga Gordon Ramsay's words of wisdom: if it's brown, it's cooked, if it's black, it's foo*ed. Hubby adores Nigella, although not strictly for her culinary ability, I fear. We've also invented the Hewie drinking game. Whenever Iain Hutters the phrase "not tooo much" or any variations on "I implore you" ... all players get to chugalug a fresh glass of pinot grigio.

I think celebrity chefs are generally great fun to watch on TV. They do inspire the average person to try new dishes or at least add a bit more pizzaz to everyday cooking. Just got Foxtel and find it hard to go past all the cooking shows.

I agree with Karen on every comment. Celeb chefs are great entertainment for novice cooks and talented home chefs alike and I enjoy their pearls of wisdom too as you can't get that simply from reading a recipe in a cookbook. I'm addicted to Lifestyle cooking shows on Foxtel too and on free TV I even tune in to Fresh and Hewey daily - it doesn't help my hit and miss attempts at cooking though... a new cookbook might though!

Nobody lives in a void. A very few people actually create genuine innovations in cooking and nearly always they are on the back of combinations of othe peoples experiences. Celebrity chefs are, in my view, celebrities who happen to be chefs at a time when there is an enormous interest in food. Like other entertainers you can take em or leave em. As for recipies, apart from the plethora of books, the internet is unbeatable - try and find a recipe for syllabub anywhere else!Research in England shows that only 4% of TV food programme viewers ever try to cook from the recipes. furthermore the self promotion of these people is encouraged by the media for their own reasons. One needs to get the views of the public through food blogs e.g. see www.1001dinners.blogspot.com and some of the links it provides

My husband is a chef and we had a restaurant and catering company for 4 years so it's interesting to watch shows like Kitchen Nightmares. The problem is that you don't need qualifications to be a chef. As much as I admire Jamie Oliver for his stand on school lunches and giving underpriveleged kids a go in his restaurants, every time I see him stick his finger or a spoon in something and lick it, it gives me the horrors. There are also other culprits and this is a complete turn off for me. Where is their basic hygiene? Next time you eat a restaurant meal, stop to wonder if it has had a stray finger in there!

I'm with you Exile7, I am fed up with Celeb Chefs, especially if they have to resort to foul language in an endeavour to get a following. I can get my kicks elsewhere thanks.

I absolutely love all these shows...to be honest it's about time that we started having programs on tv that showed a real trade...a real skill...a real passion...and this time it's food. I know i would much prefer to watch and learn from talented and passionate professionals rather than watching fifteen 20-something guys and girls sitting around in a house where the most important thing is who snogged who!!! If anything these shows expose alot of people to an industry that is often mis-judged as glamourous...and people will start to respect and appreciate the hard work that goes into a simple bowl of roasted mushroom risotto...

Some of these 'so called' chefs really do leave something to desired...Some I enjoy. My favorite is 'The Cook and the Chef'...This program shows them being normal, talking about somethings being difficult to make, showing respect for each other and enjoying themselves... It is a good 1/2 hour of tv, and no commercials. Jamie Oliver is entertaining...I agree, his hands 'on' or 'in' the food can be a bit of a down side...but I like his enthusiasm...I feel they a lot of these chef's are over rated as to their abilities...and when you get famous for swearing, I am not too impressed... But don't take all off the air - just some....Sue 12/0/08
