PROFILED BY DE GROOTSIt’s the end of a fabulous night at Zapata’s. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed themselves, ordering their fill of comidas (main meals) and ostras cosas (side orders). But as usual someone (not mentioning any names… but it is usually Uncle Pete) has ordered an extravagant amount of tequila that the rest of the table will now be forced to pay for. But wait un momento amigo! Zapata’s isn’t one of those stuffy restaurants that snarls at you if you ask to pay separately, in fact, they are happy to issue individual bills so you only pay for what you order (even available on tables of two, just in case you don’t want to pay for your date’s dessert).
From the straw ceiling that absorbs noise to the generous option of individual bills, Zapata’s is a restaurant engineered to keep people happy and in the mood to party. Black and white photographs of Emiliano Zapata (an old Mexican revolutionary) line the two-tone walls. The food is fun and filling, and the serves are large enough to feed a Mexican rebellion. The fajitas are ideal for sharing with a friend; tender strips of beef or chicken breast are sauteed with capsicum and onion in a spicy sauce and brought to the table (still sizzling) ready to be wrapped in warm soft tortillas.
