But what is a churro exactly? Here's a little history on this wonderful Spanish invention:A panfried pastry, the churro was created by nomadic shepherds that herded churra sheep over the mountains of Spain centuries ago. The name churra refers to the shape, similar to the churra sheep's horn.
Originally like a bread stick, they were eaten plain or rolled in cinnamon sugar. The traditional star shape has developed over time and ensures the correct texture as the inside is cooked through while the outside becomes crisp.
During the 16th century, Spanish conquistadores brought Churros to the new world. When Aztec chocolate was brought to Europe, the tradition of chocolate con churros began. Nowadays, piping hot chocolate sauce, prepared thick in the Spanish fashion, is still the favoured Churro accompaniment. From street vendors to restaurants, churros are enjoyed for breakfast, snacks and dessert throughout Spain. The fluted sticks of fried dough are usually sold in dozens or half-dozens and are tastiest when eaten fresh.
All churra are made to order and cooked in 100% sunflower oil. No preservatives, colours or sweeteners are added. Churra pose no problems for Halal and vegetarian diets.
