Profiled by de GrootsEstablished in 1968, Hofbrauhaus is a unique dining concept and the only one its kind in central Melbourne. Situated on Market Lane, Hofbrauhaus combines good, hearty German cuisine with live dancing and music in true Bavarian style. More a night out than a quick meal with friends, Hofbrauhaus is a traditional German restaurant in every sense of the word, the décor designed to look like an alpine setting and the staff dressed in traditional garb. Feast on traditional Bavarian cuisine from a country known for its deliciously rich food, and be entertained by the live acts including the much loved, slap dancing.
Hofbrauhaus caters well to a variety of function events and large groups whilst also offering an a la carte menu. At lunchtime nibble on the kalbsleberpastete: garnished veal liver pate served with melba toast, before tucking into the hänchen schnitzel: crumbed chicken schnitzel served with salad, potatoes of the day and homemade mayonnaise. For dinner start with an entrée of matjes herring: marinated herring with apples, onion, sweet-sour cucumber mayonnaise, sour cream and boiled potato, followed by the house specialty, münchner schweinshaxe: pickled roasted pork shank served with sauerkraut and potato dumpling. Leave room for the homemade apple strudel. The concise wine list of mostly Australian varieties is supplemented by a selection of German beer, schnapps and cider.
