PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAAlthough it may not be associated with the world-famous Buddha Bars of Paris, Dubai, Cairo, London and Sao Paolo, our local version of the ultra-cool venue does its best to impress. Just metres from the Subiaco Hotel, the Buddha Bar’s location and alluring entry create an air of mystery that’s matched with dimmed lighting, cosy couches and lofty ceilings inside. The vibe here is always fairly chilled, even with the addition of a DJ spinning vinyl every Wednesday night. Food wise, it’s tasty Indian and Asian fare with a wide selection of entrees, sides, mains and vegetarian options to choose from. The servings are of decent size, the flavours fresh and feisty and the service is just as warm as the surroundings.
For an authentic Indian meal, I recommend starting with the samosas and Buddha basket (three types of flat Indian breads served with mint yoghurt) or the masala grilled calamari followed by classics like aloo gobi, chicken tikka masala and lamb palak. Interestingly, the nasi goring, although Indonesian rather than Indian, is done very well and is available with chicken, seafood or vegetarian. If you’re out for a few evening drinks, why not order a range of entrees and sides to pick at? This way you get to sample some great flavours while keeping things reasonably light as you indulge in some of the fabulous cocktails they make behind the Buddha Bar. All we need now are Buddha Bar compilation CDs and our local adaptation will be jostling with the international version for global popularity! It really is a great spot for a casual night out with friends.
